Circular Product Service Systems enabled by the Internet of Things

The number of connected devices is growing at a high speed, changing the way we produce and consume products and services. This research explores the role of digital data management in the design and implementation of circular solutions. Smart, connected products – making up the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) – have the ability to sense, interact and communicate with their environment. The resulting data, e.g. about product use and performance, could potentially be used to improve energy and materials management in product-service-systems. However, while industry cases indicate promising results, more research is needed in the intersection between IoT and circular economy. Emilia’s PhD project aims to clarify and assess the capability of IoT technology as an enabler of circular solutions.  By doing so, her research can support product and service providers in how to make best use of the IoT technology for circular strategies.
